On the Move!

The dream of us SPCA animals moving to a new home just got closer! Our building shell has finally been moved to its permanent foundation! As you can tell, this was a very interesting and exciting time for us. Let me tell you, I kept a very close eye on the proceedings. Someone has to manage the humans, right?

So my name is Annie. I've been calling the shelter my home since July 2008. I am a little shy at first, but I quickly warm up. I am not a cuddler, but I do enjoy a good pat. As you can see, I am a bigger gal, but that just means there is more of me to love.

More bad news

For the second time in two months, someone had the audacity to steal from the homeless pets in the Lloydminster area. That's right, the shelter was broken into for a second time in February, with the perpetrators smashing the front door again. Obviously the SPCA does not deal with big amounts of money, so the robber's "haul" was minimal. It actually costs 4 times as much to keep replacing the door. It is just the mentality of people who would steal from a non-profit that astounds us.

It is so sad that is the last year, so many non-profit organizations have been targeted. Many are trying their hardest just to keep the doors open with money raised from donations and fundraisers. Remember, when someone steals from a non-profit, they are not just taking money from that organization, they are stealing from YOU, the kind people who so generously give money and support our local charities.

If you have any information on the recent SPCA break in or other non-profit robbery, please contact the SPCA as soon as possible. We need to send the message that it is not ok to steal from homeless pets like Valentine, the cute cat pictured left. Valentine is just one of many cats being housed by the SPCA. She is a 2 year old spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated female.

Of course, the SPCA could not run without the generous support of our local community. Thank you so much for your on going loyalty, and helping us provide unwanted pets with a place to stay while awaiting their new homes.

Important Spring Reminder to Save Lives

Hey folks. I'm Wyatt, a handsome orange boy who's been at the SPCA since March 2008! That's right, my one year Anniversary at the shelter is sneaking up, so I'm on a mission to find a new home before then.

What else has been happening around the shelter? Well, we've been very successful with adoptions lately! During the cold months, we always see in increase in stray pets. Thankfully the people in and around Lloydminster care about those poor cold animals, and bring them to the SPCA for some warmth, love, and a full belly! Anyway, we are very lucky that adoptions have kept up with the steady stream of incoming animals, and some of our long time residents have even found new homes. Now it is my turn!

The next big thing the staff has to prepare for is spring, when we start seeing unwanted pregnant cats and litters of kittens. This always puts a strain on the shelter, as numbers of cats suddenly swell, and there are not enough homes for everyone. It also means that cute kittens find new homes fast, and some of us oldies but goodies end up hanging around for quite a while. We have even have kittens born in the shelter, who are still awaiting homes a year later.


Of course, the answer to this problem is so simple! Please everyone, spay and neuter your pets! I myself have undergone the operation, and I am definitely no less of a man. In fact, I am sweeter and more loving than ever, just what most ladies are looking for. A real cuddler, who always has time to listen to your problems. And this is true for all pets - we are just happier and healthier once we are spayed are neutered.So do it for your pet's health, as well as for the thousands of pets our shelter needs to re-home every year.

Bah, Humbug!

Well, the SPCA received a big ole lump of coal this year for Christmas. On Boxing Day, we were victims of a break and enter. Thankfully no animals were stolen or injured. However, the robber did manage to grab some cash from our float, as well as recyclable bottles, and some other odds and ends. Access was gained by kicking in the front glass door, until the lock could be opened. Sadly, we had to stay closed on Dec 29, after not being opened to the public for 4 days, from the 25-28. A new door was installed today, and we should be open tomorrow, on Dec 30. So please come down and check out our animals up for adoption! My name is Spade, you met me in the last blog post. I am still here, as well as a number of other cute and cuddly kitties!

Happy Holidays from the SPCA

Greetings from the Lloydminster & District SPCA! As you can see, even though it is the holiday season, we are still hard at work out here. It's busy, busy, busy! My name is Spade, I was actually born at the shelter. Can you tell how totally cute I am? And for you folks looking for an interesting cat, you need to come check me out. I'm what they call a polydactyl, which means I have extra toes on my feet! Trust me, I am very cute and entertaining. If you stop by the shelter before the end on December, you could take me home for free! We are still running our "adopt me, get my shadow for free" promotion. This means if you adopt any cat in the shelter, you can also take a black kitty (a "shadow") home for free!

On behalf of all the animals staying in the shelter, as well as the staff and board of directors, we would like to wish your family a very Merry Christmas, and all the best in 2009.

Slim Jim wants YOU!

Hey folks, it's Blitz here again. Yup, this sexy, slender orange boy is still waiting for you to come take me home. The perfect time to come for a visit is Wednesday December 10. The shelter is celebrating "Home for the Holidays". There will be treats for people and pets, and well as 2 local celebrities begging to get out of the dog kennels. Finally, those humans will get a taste of caged life! So stop on by for some fun, and ask to meet me while you are there. And don't forget about our Shadow cat adoption program. If you adopt a wonderful kitty friend (like me), you can also adopt a black or grey cat from the shelter for no charge! It is always a challenge to get black pets adopted, and we hope this will help more pets find their forever homes this Holiday season.


Once you've stopped by the shelter and found your forever friend (remember, my name is Blitz) on Wednesday December 10, it is time to check out Paws and Claus - pet pictures with Santa. Swing down to the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds between 2-8, and Santa Claus himself will be there to grant your pet's holiday wishes. The shelter staff wants to remind everyone to make sure their pets are under control at all times, so please bring a leash or pet carrier.

As the weather turns colder, people become more aware of stray pets in their community. Every animal deserves a warm place to sleep, and fresh food and water. So if you see a homeless pet fending for itself in this cold weather, please bring it by the shelter!

Halloween Fun!

Hmmmm, I'm afraid I reported an error in my last blog post. But luckily, I have been given another chance. It's Blitz here, and I just wanted you all to know I did not go to Saskatoon. I am still hanging at the shelter in Lloydminster, waiting for my new owner. I have a new kennel mate, a little kitten. I like this new friend, but she keeps hissing at me! Good thing I am such a sweet boy, I will have won this kitten's love in no time.

On Halloween, the shelter had our first annual Spooktacular Midnight Madness Adopt-a-thon‏. I'm such a great looking orange pumpkin color, I thought I might get adopted. Not this time, but there were 2 rabbits, 4 cats and 5 dogs adopted, which is fantastic! Everyone who came down had fun, and the staff really looked great in their costumes. Next year will be bigger and better than ever (although I hope not to be around by then).


So don't forget, if you are looking for a super-sweet, lovable orange man, come check me out. Ask for Blitz, the girls will show you to my "office". Hey, I've already celebrated Halloween here, maybe by Christmas I can be lounging under a tree, sniffing presents.
